POS Insights: Cash History, Payment Mix and Peak Hours

The pain: you feel your business instead of seeing it
Every experienced agent carries a theory of their own business. "Saturdays are my best days." "Everybody withdraws in the morning." "Transfers are taking over from cash." Some of these theories are right. Some are expensive superstitions. And there is no way to tell them apart from inside the queue, because human memory keeps the dramatic days and quietly deletes the ordinary ones.
Meanwhile the questions that decide your income go unanswered. When exactly should I open? Which day deserves extra float? Is my drawer trending up or leaking down? What was that huge outflow last Tuesday? You served every one of those answers with your own hands. They are sitting in your records. You just cannot see them from ground level.
This is the whole Gazeloft idea: the loft is the platform above the shop floor. You climb up, look down, and the patterns that were invisible in the rush become obvious.
What POS Insights gives you
Because every entry in your POS space carries a type, a time, amounts, methods and fees, Gazeloft can draw your business honestly. The Insights section includes:
- Cash history: a chart of your cash-at-hand level over time. Since the drawer ledger is all-time and never resets, this line is the true story of your liquidity: the Friday peaks, the after-bank-run dips, the slow leak that means someone is not recording.
- Payment mix: how your business splits across cash, transfer and card. This is your early warning system for the market's slow drift to transfers, and it tells you how much drawer cash you really need to hold.
- Peak hours: which hours of the day carry your volume. Built from the timestamps of your real entries, not from your memory of busy-ness.
- Biggest spends: your largest outflows, surfaced so the big movements never hide in the noise.
- Best and worst days: which days actually earn, ranked by real recorded results.
None of this is sample data or industry averages. Every chart is drawn from your own entries, which is also why the habit of recording everything pays twice: once as an accurate ledger, again as accurate insight. Even the offline entries you queued during a network blackout take their place in the charts once they sync, on the correct day and hour, so a bad-network week never leaves a false hole in your history.
Step-by-step: reading your insights
In the app:
- Open your POS space and go to Insights.
- Start with cash history. Look for the shape: healthy stands show a sawtooth, cash building then dropping at each bank run. A line that drifts down without bank runs is a leak.
- Check payment mix. Note the cash share, then decide your drawer float size from data instead of habit.
- Open peak hours. Compare the chart to your actual opening hours and your worker roster.
- Scan biggest spends and best/worst days weekly, not hourly. Patterns need a few weeks of entries to become trustworthy.
On the web dashboard: the same insights render at gazeloft.com, larger and easier to study side by side. Many owners do a Sunday evening review from a laptop: one look back at the week, one decision for the next.
Worked example: Amaka moves her opening hour
Amaka runs a stand near a market in Enugu. After six weeks of consistent recording, her insights say:
- Peak hours: 7 am to 9 am carries 31 percent of her daily transaction count. She had been opening at 8 am, sleeping through half her best window.
- Payment mix: 46 percent cash, 51 percent transfer, 3 percent card. A year of "everybody pays cash" thinking, corrected in one chart.
- Best days: Saturday first, then, to her surprise, Monday. Market ran Saturdays, but Monday mornings were full of traders depositing weekend takings.
- Cash history: a clean sawtooth, except a flat unexplained dip of about ₦8,000 across two Thursdays.
- Biggest spends: the dip resolved instantly: two large unrecorded generator fuel purchases her brother made from the drawer.
Amaka makes three changes. She opens at 6:30 am, catching the early window: roughly 12 extra transactions a day at an average net charge of ₦180, about ₦2,160 more daily profit. She doubles her Monday float so she stops turning away big deposits. And drawer money now leaves only through a recorded entry, no exceptions, even for family. Total cost of the analysis: zero. She was already recording; the loft just let her see.
Run the arithmetic on the first change alone. An extra ₦2,160 a day across 26 working days is about ₦56,000 a month, roughly a 30 percent raise, earned not by working harder but by working the hours her own data said were valuable. Insights rarely tell you to do more. They usually tell you to do the same things at better times, with better float, at better prices.
Tips and pitfalls
- Record everything, or the charts lie politely. Insights are drawn from entries. A skipped busy hour looks like a quiet hour forever after.
- Give it three or four weeks. One week of data shows weather. A month shows climate. Make schedule and float decisions on the month.
- Act on one insight at a time. Change your opening hour, watch for two weeks, then change the next thing. Change everything at once and you cannot tell what worked.
- Use cash history as your theft and leak detector. The line should move only when entries move it. Unexplained steps down are unrecorded money leaving.
- Backdate honestly. If you enter yesterday's transactions today, use the date field. Backdated entries land in the right day and keep peak hours and best days truthful.

Frequently asked questions
How much history do I need before insights are useful?
Charts appear as soon as you have entries, but trust patterns after three to four weeks of consistent recording.
Is any of this sample or demo data?
No. Every chart in your space is computed from your own recorded entries. Empty history means empty charts, which is itself honest.
Can I see insights on my phone and laptop?
Yes. The app and the web dashboard at gazeloft.com show the same insights from the same data, always in sync.
Do reversed transactions pollute the charts?
No. A reversed entry keeps its row in history but its effect is zeroed, so charts reflect what really stood.
Which plan do I need for insights?
Insights come with the Plus plan at ₦1,500 per month or ₦15,000 per year, alongside profit tracking, customers and loyalty, and inventory alerts. You can start on the free 30-day trial and build up recording habits first.
